It was on17 August 1998 that MPO gave its maiden performance in the beautiful DFP. Over the years we have seen a steadily growing audience amongst the young and old, a testimony of the quality and variety of MPOs mesmerising music.

I am indeed delighted and proud to learn that this new seasons opening Gala concert will feature the world premier of a new composition by our child prodigy, Tengku Ahmad Irfan, who will also perform Prokofievs Piano Concerto No. 2, one of the most technically-difficult concertos in the piano repertoire. As a walk down memory lane, the MPO will perform Strauss Don Juan, which was played 15 years ago at DFPs inaugural concert. Together with the Great Violin Concertos series, featuring leading violinists and works of Shostakovich, Mozart and Brahms, to name a few, and the continuing popularity of POPs/Special concerts, the MPO promises to deliver yet another exciting and not-to-be missed season.

I believe the MPO has done well in promoting and developing our talented Malaysian youths. Through the MPYO, more new musical talents have been unearthed and the platform provided for their artistic nurturing and enhancements. Although the rigours of training are there, I believe that the experiences are rewarding.

With the continuing gracious support of MPOs main donor PETRONAS, and our loyal sponsors, supporters and friends, I am sure that we will be able to sustain and share the wonders and joys of MPOs music to the community at large, not forgetting those for whom such simple joys of music are not easily accessible nor savoured.

Please join me in welcoming the 2013/14 Season of the MPO and let us all indulge in the new Seasons offerings!

MESSAGE FROM THE PATRON, MAL AYSIAN PHILHARMONIC ORCHESTR A

Tun Dr Siti Hasmah Bt Hj Mohd Ali

4 5

MESSAGE FROM THE CHAIRMAN

Dato Mohd Medan Abdullah

Welcome to a magnificent and harmonious new season with our very own Malaysian Philharmonic Orchestra (MPO)!

As the MPO celebrates its 15th birthday, I am delighted that we have stayed true throughout the years in our purpose to share the depth, power and beauty of great music.

This new 2013/14 Season allows us to once again reimagine the tremendous energy and power of music. Always innovative and looking to broaden our artistic horizon, the MPO has commissioned a new work by a young Malaysian prodigy who will also play one of the most difficult concertos in the piano repertoire. The annual DFP Seni Festival will once again see the MPO collaborating with local artists and crossing musical boundaries by giving traditional performing arts groups the opportunity to play together with the orchestra, thereby realising Malaysian content aspirations.

This season will also be Music Director Claus Peter Flors farewell season and we will see him conducting three of Mahlers most

popular symphonies. After serving 6 years as Music Director, Maestro Flour will leave an indelible stamp on the MPO.

The positive energy of music fills Dewan Filharmonik PETRONAS as we continue to showcase a splendid repertoire of international conductors, soloists and musicians with Stphane Denve, Steven Osborne and Carl Davis returning to play in this beautiful hall.

This celebration of music would not be possible without the unwavering support and commitment of our beloved Patron YABhg Tun Dr Siti Hasmah Bt Haji Mohd Ali, our main donor PETRONAS, our sponsors, partners, loyal subscribers and all our wonderful audiences.

Thank you so much for your support in this journey of appreciating the beauty and energy of music.

4 5

M A N A G E M E N T T E A M

CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICER Nor Raina Yeong Abdullah

CEOS OFFICE Hanis Abdul Halim

BUSINESS & MARKETING MANAGEMENTCarl SelvarajahNur Nazlin Azrina NaimuddinNorkertini NeeAt Ziafrizani Chek PaHisham Abdul Jalil Sarah GhaziNurartikah IlyasAsmahan AbdullahFaizol Ramli

MUSIC TALENT DEVELOPMENT& MANAGEMENTSoraya Mansor

FINANCE & ITSyakirah MustapaMohd Afiq IbrahimMohammed Hakimi Mohammed RosliNorhisham Abdul Rahman

PROCUREMENT & CONTRACTMohamad Firuz Mohamad AliLee Kel LenWan Hasni Hafizah Wan Hassan

HUMAN RESOURCE MANAGEMENT& ADMINISTRATIONHamidah AliasSharhida SaadMuknoazlida MukhadzimLogiswary RamanWan Intan Shahfinas Abas

TECHNICAL OPERATIONSFiroz Khan M YunusMohd Zamir Mohd IshaJohan Mohd NohShahrul Rizal M AliDayan Erwan Maharal

DEWAN FILHARMONIK PETRONAS

CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICER Nor Raina Yeong Abdullah

GENERAL MANAGERTimothy Tsukamoto

GMS OFFICEPaul Maurice Wei-Liang Pincon

ORCHESTRA MANAGEMENTNorman IsmailShannon Ho

ARTISTIC ADMINISTRATIONKartini Ratna Sari Ahmat AdamTai Tse Han

MUSIC LIBRARYKhor Chin YangSharon Francis Lihan

MALAYSIAN PHILHARMONICYOUTH ORCHESTRAAhmad Muriz Che Rose

EDUCATION & OUTREACHShafrin SabriAhmad Faris Ahmad Khairi

MALAYSIAN PHILHARMONIC ORCHESTRA

CHAIRMANDato Mohd Medan

Abdullah

B O A R D M E M B E R S

Tunku Tan Sri Dato Seri Ahmad B Yahaya

JuniwatiRahmat Hussin

Datuk KhorChin Poey

6 7

MESSAGE FROM THE MUSIC DIRECTOR

Claus Peter Flor

Dear Friends & Guests of the MPO,

The MPO will be celebrating its birthday on 17 August 2013, exactly 15 years since its inaugural performance on 17 August 1998. The orchestra has played many impressive concerts throughout the past 15 seasons, and we have been fortunate to have the support of a dedicated audience. I know that many of you have been with us from the beginning, and we thank you for your continued attendance.

The MPO has commissioned a new work from Malaysian prodigy Tengku Ahmad Irfan to be premiered at the season opening concerts. This next season we will highlight works of Mahler. In the World of Gustav Mahler series, I will conduct his first, fourth, and fifth symphonies; conductor Hubert Soudant and contralto Sara Mingardo will join together for Mahlers haunting song cycle, Kindertotenlieder.

Another highlight of the upcoming season is our Great Violin Concertos series featuring virtuosic violin soloists James Ehnes (Shostakovich Concerto No. 1), Tianwa Yang (Lalo

Symphonie espagnole), Vilde Frang (Korngold Concerto), Tibor Kovc (Bartk Concerto No. 2), Josef pacek (Mendelssohn Concerto) and Liza Ferschtman (Brahms Concerto).

We are excited to announce the return of many of your favourite conductors and soloists, including Stphane Denve, Olari Elts, Martin Sieghart, Jean-Efflam Bavouzet, Robert Levin & Ya-Fei Chuang, Benedetto Lupo, and many more.

Performing with the MPO for the first time, we welcome conductors Alondra de la Parra & Kazuki Yamada; pianists Till Fellner & Javier Perianes; and sopranos Karina Gauvin & Kimy McLaren to name just a few.
