  • Abstract

Not as the most writings on Tsai Ming-Liangs movies: the modernity syndrome,

sex and lust, body and spatiality, the assimilation of private and public, the nostalgia

of old films and old songs, the documentary-like film shooting skill and so on. This

article is to point out the fragments and fragmentation of Tsais movies. Based on

Walter Benjamins thinking, these fragments resemble denkbilders (thinking

pictures,) hold lots of images and ideas in them and make each of them a complete

universe. The author breaks Tsais movies into four parts: spaces, characters,

symbolic items, and music, explores the allegory in them, and piece them together

as a constellation, the assembly of denkbilders.

Key Words: ruin, fragment, Walter Benjamin, denkbilder

    1. Dies Bildnis ist bezaubernd schn

    3

Dies Bildnis ist bezaubernd schn, This likeness is enchantingly lovely,

Wie noch kein Auge je geseh'n! As no eye has ever beheld !

Ich fhl' es, wie dies Gtterbild I feel it, as this heavenly picture

Mein Herz mit neuer Regung fllt. My heart with new emotion fills.

Dies' etwas kann ich zwar nicht

    nennen,

This something I can not name,

Doch fhl' ichs hier wie Feuer Yet I feel it here like fire burning.

    brennen.

Soll die Empfindung Liebe sein? Can the feeling be love?

Ja, ja, die Liebe ist's allein. Yes, yes, love it is alone.

O, wenn ich sie nur finden knnte! O, if only I could find her!

O, wenn sie doch schon vor mir

    stnde!

O, if only she were standing before

    me!

Ich wrde, wrde, warm und rein, I would, would, warmly and chastely,

Was wrde ich? Ich wrde sie voll

    Entzcken

What would I do? I would full of

    rapture her

An diesen heissen Busen drcken Against this glowing bosom press

Und ewig wre sie dann mein. And forever then she would be mine.

    A pocketful of uncooked rice

    And six little birds

    Put into a cooking wok

  • 42

    When they are cooked

    The birds will sing

    They must be tasty

For they are for the king

The king is in the house

    Doing his accounts

While the queen is in the kitchen

    Eating bread with sugar

The maidens are by the pond

Drying the flour in the sun

    A little black bird comes

    And pecks her little nose

    3. Der Hlle Rache kocht in meinem Herzen

Der Hlle Rache kocht in meinem

    Herzen,

The vengeance of Hell boils in my

    heart,

    Tod und Verzweiflung flammet um

    mich her!

Death and despair flame around me!

    Fhlt nicht durch dich Sarastro

    Todesschmerzen,

If Sarastro does not through you feel

    the pain of death,

    So bist du meine Tochter

    nimmermehr.

Then you will be my daughter

    nevermore.

Verstossen sei auf ewig, Disowned may you be forever,

Verlassen sei auf ewig, Abandoned may you be forever,

Zertrmmert sei'n auf ewig Destroyed be forever

Alle Bande der Natur All the bonds of nature,

Wenn nicht durch dich Sarastro wird

    erblassen!

If not through you Sarastro becomes

    pale! (as death)

    Hrt, Rachegtter, hrt der Mutter

    Schwur!

Hear, Gods of Revenge, hear a

    mother's oath!

Just so I hear your voice

I waited all winter and summer

Just so I can catch your glance

I waited all night without rest

Youre like a fragrant flowers heart

And I am the petals that surround you

When I hear news of your arrival

    I break into tears

I long to hold your hand

And chain you with little earrings

You are a lotus in the pond of my heart

Consuming my water in your thirst

Just so we can exchange vows I waited till autumn had come

I hide timidly from your bright eyes

Even amidst clouds of whirling dust

    I can find you easily

    My true heart tells me

When I realize this is an eternal myth

My true heart will melt away

    I need you
