Will be ready by 2016-17. 50 INDIAN RAILWAYS MECHANICAL AND STORES DEPARTMENT ENVIRONMENT INITIATIVESAUXILIARY POWER UNIT (APU) - fitted on locos for fuel saving When train is stabled APU switches off main engine and starts a smaller engine for meeting the train requirements. Reduces fuel consumption by 88% while loco is standing All re-built locomotives provided with APUs. All new locomotives by 2016-17 51 INDIAN RAILWAYS MECHANICAL AND STORES DEPARTMENT ENVIRONMENT INITIATIVESBIO-DIESEL Bio-Diesel Plant Various edible oils, including used oils, other vegetable oils and animal fats are processed to produce Bio-Diesel. By product- Glycerin One Bio-diesel plant will be commissioned this year at Tondiarpet (Chennai) with installed capacity of 30 tonnes per day Indian Railways has planned phase-wise introduction of 5% blending of bio-diesel from this year onwards.
