    AUXILIARY POWER UNIT (APU) - fitted on locos for fuel saving

    When train is stabled APU

    switches off main engine

    and starts a smaller

    engine for meeting the

    train requirements.

    Reduces fuel consumption by 88%

    while loco is standing

    All re-built locomotives provided with APUs.

    All new locomotives by 2016-17

    BIO-DIESEL

    Bio-Diesel Plant

    Various edible oils, including used oils, other vegetable

    oils and animal fats are processed to produce Bio-

    Diesel. By product- Glycerin

    One Bio-diesel

    plant will be

    commissioned

    this year at

    Tondiarpet

    (Chennai) with

    installed

    capacity of 30

    tonnes per day

    Indian Railways has planned phase-wise introduction of 5% blending of bio-

    diesel from this year onwards. This will help in reducing carbon footprint.

    RENEWABLE ENERGY FOR COACH LIGHTING

    Project for Fitment of Solar panels on 15 DEMU

    coaches initiated

    Solar Panel provided on the roof of NG coach at Kalka Workshop for battery charging
