Salom Kiner

For a lot of people, Kassav is what got people dancing at the surprise-parties of their teen years. For me, Kassav is more about child-hood, the soundtrack of Sundays in summer, and my parents Creole heritage. In both cases, and given how comfortable Montreux Jazz is with legends, lets agree that it was a legendary group that performed last night on the stage of the Auditorium Stravinski. Far from the fads that the media create and destroy at a super-sonic rate, Kassav came up with their very own secret of eternal life. They combine respect for traditional musictraditional carnival-style melodieswith openness to influences from more contemporary music and techniques. In April of 2009, this multi-award-winning group filled the Stade de France with 65,000 adoring fans for a thirtieth-anniversary concert.

Despite being the uncontested inventors of an entire musical genre and filling every seat in

elephantine venues all over the planet, and even with successful solo careers and side projects in addition to Kassav, these apostles of zouk are still just as fresh as when they were just starting out. Theirs is true party music: three notes into their soundcheck and the press at-tachs, a pretty jaded group, were dancing in the aisles. The backstage is a combat zone: they just found out they are supposed to play a one-hour set when they are rather more accustomed to playing twice that long

Between two interviews, Jocelyne Broard, the completely captivating lead singer of Kas-sav, explained the bands philosophy to me as we sat in the sun on the terrasse Nestl: We are often considered nothing but simple party music. But just because we can make people dance doesnt mean we cant try to make a dif-ference. Our songs say that if you really look at others you will learn to love them. Getting people to look for Beauty in others and in life is not only the best thing we have to offer, but also the very serious role of the artist. After a Coke Zero and three snapshots of the lake, she was off to rejoin her 12 musicians. Moments from going on, no signs of stage fright or stress: draped in their performance finery, they were joking with acquaintances.

Kassav, the only group from the French West Indies on the summer festival circuit, displays the simple elegance of those with nothing to prove. The single special request on their minimalist rider gives a good idea: a bottle of champagne for Jocelyne if you want a big smile. We didnt need any bubblyKassav had us all beaming.Salom Kiner

MAIN PARTNERS

FLASH

LE SOURIRE DE KASSAV A SMILE FROM KASSAV

Dimanche, 1er juillet 20124 Montreux Jazz Chronicle

PROGRAMME

TODAY 1.07.12 TOMORROW 2.07.12 Scne Venue

ArtisteArtist

HoraireSchedule

Artiste Artist

Horaire Schedule

Auditorium Stravinski JETHRO TULLS IAN ANDERSONperforms Thick As A Brick 1 & 2

LITTLE FEAT

20:00 | 8 PM ALABAMA SHAKES

ALANIS MORISSETTE

20:00 | 8 PM

Miles Davis Hall ISFAR SARABSKI BOBBY MCFERRIN & CHICK COREA

GLOBAL GUMBO PROJECTPresented byQUINCY JONESFeaturingALFREDO RODRIGUEZ, NIKKI YANOFSKY, ANDREAS VARADY

20:30 | 8:30 PM PAT METHENY UNITY BANDwithCHRIS POTTER, BEN WILLIAMS, ANTONIO SNCHEZ

80th Birthday ConcertGEORGE GRUNTZ: DIG MY TRANE withDAVE LIEBMAN, LARRY SCHNEIDER, CHRIS HUNTER, ARIE VOLINEZ, JOHN RILEY

20:30 | 8:30 PM

Montreux Jazz Caf FREE

WE HAVE BAND (UK)

DJANGO DJANGO (UK)After ShowLAURA LEISHMAN (CA)

22:00 | 10 PM TAKK PRESENTSELECTRIC GUEST (US)

MICHAEL KIWANUKA (UK)

After ShowGREEN GIANT (CH)

22:00 | 10 PM

The Studio FREE

THE FUTUREFRED LILLA (CH)

HARD ROCK SOFA (RU)

IDRISS CHEBAK (MA)

23:00 | 11 PM AUDIOTHEqUEBORIS WHY (CH) & ROBEL (CH)

WOLF + LAMB (US)

SOUL CLAP (US)

23:00 | 11 PM

Music in the Park

FREE

TOOWOOMBA GRAMMAR SCHOOL & GLENNIE HIGH SCHOOL BIG BAND (AU)

THE ROOSEVELT JAZZ BAND (US)

CHOEUR GLOW-GOSPEL (CH)

4TH TIME AROUND (CH)

MANU LANVIN AND THE DEVILS BLUES (FR)

14:00 | 2 PM

16:00 | 4 PM

18:00 | 6 PM

20:15 | 8:15 PM

22:30 | 10:30 PM

BIG BAND DPARTEMENTAL ARDCHE (BBDA)

STANFORD JAZZ ORCHESTRA FEAT.
