NEW CHEHfilCALS SPECIALTIES NF Grade of Glyceryl Monostearate

A grade of glyceryl monostearate which meets F specifications is be ing produced by Glyco Products Co., Inc . Designated as glyceryl monostearate S-1272, the product is white, bland in odor, and supplied in fine free flowing bead form. Glyco recommends it for use in the cosmetic and pharmaceutical industries to act as an emulsifier, thickener, stabilizer, and opacifier. CS 1

Liquid Germicide A liquid germicide, Santophen 1 Solu

tion, is being produced in commercial quantities by Monsanto Chemical Co. The product, which is said to b e effective against both fungi and bacteria, consists of 7 5 % by weight Santophen 1 and 2 5 % isopropanol. In addition to its stability and ease of handling, the solution eliminates one step in prepar ing germicidal formulations which involve the use of isopropanol. The company will continue to offer Santophen 1 flakes for those who prefer the 100% active material .

A germicide of substituted phenolic composition, Santophen 1 shows phenol coefficients in the order of 150 to 200

Magnesium Trisilicafe A free-flowing form of magnesium tri-

silicate, 2 M g 0 . 3 S i : 0 2 . x H 2 0 , is being manufactured by J. T. Baker Chemical Co. According to Baker's fine chemical division, the product , a fine, white powder used in antacid preparat ions, offers to the pharmaceutical and drug manufacturer several important advantages over present-day forms. It is said to mix readily with other ingredients, and to granulate easily. Also, it pours freely without sticking and feeds uniformly from powder hopper. Baker's free-flowing magnesium trisilicate, U.S.P. medium powder can be wet-granulated or dry-slugged and is especially adapted to tablet manufacture or other pharmaceutical operations requir ing moderate bulking properties. CS 3

Silicon Powders. Sylvania Electric Products, Inc., tungsten and chemical division, is producing high purity silicon powders specially processed to meet requirements for manufacture of crystals for radar, video relay, and other microwave applications. According to Sylvania, silicon powders have purities of 99.85 and 9 9 . 9 5 % as compared to previous powders supplied with puri t ies of 9 5 . 7 5 % . A process was developed to assure uniform chemical composition and physical properties from batch to batch. This uniformity should permit product ion of crystals for use as microwave detectors and mixers in radar and video applications with a predictable range of electrical characteristics. CS 4

Urea Plastic. A low-cost black and brown urea-plastic material is available in commercial quanti t ies from Libbey-Owens-Ford Glass C o / s Plaskon division. Outs tanding feature of the compound is said to be the fact t ha t urea's excellent electrical and physical properties are incorporated in a material in a price range below that of any s tandard molding compound. It is nonbleeding when immersed in water. Both the black and the b rown urea compounds are light fast. CS 5

Heat Sealing Compound. Glyco Products Co. is incorporating Acrawax C, a high melt ing point synthetic wax, in a heat sealing compound to raise the melting and cold flow points without reducing adhesion and cohesion at low temperatures . Water , salt spray, and chemical resistance are also increased. T h e formulation has a high melting point a n d does not exhibit cracking or flaking at 45 F., according to Glyco. It is noncorrosive and forms an efficient sealing barrier against leakage of air and moisture. I t is said to b e par t icularly useful for sealing lenses in optical instruments and other glass units. CS 6

Casting Resins. A l ine of casting resins and pot t ing compounds is now be ing produced by Carl I I . Biggs Co. W h e n used for cast-resin embedments of circuits and components, Helix pot t ing compounds provide hermetic sealing protection against moisture, fungus, and fumes. T h e y also offer rugged protection against shock and vibration, according to the manufacturer . They have less than 1 % shrinkage. Supplied in liquid form, Helix resins are poured cold and will cure at room temperature. CS 7

Wax Solvent. The Elraco Engineering Co. has developed X-wax, a p roduct specifically designed t o effect solvent action on the wax accumulations tha t form in oil well casings and cause impeded and interrupted flow. Besides be ing used as a restorative t reatment of "waxed-in" wells tests show that waxing can b e prevented by periodic t reatment , according to Elraco. It is appl ied at prevail ing temperature without pre-heating and is said to be safe, efficient, a n d effective. CS 8
