    Description Thiscourseisdesignedtointroduceyoutostrategiesfortranslatingbetweendisciplinespecificknowledgeandaudiencesofinterestedoutsiders.Whilethismayincludetopicstraditionallyunderstoodastechnicalsuchasthoseinengineering,architecture,andcomputersciencetechnicalwritingencompassesanytopicthatmustbeexplainedtoaninvolved,butnotexpert,audience.Drawingontheexpertisedevelopedinyourmajor,youwillexploretechnicalwritingthroughtopicsandissuesimportanttotheworkyouplantodo.Becauseaprimaryassumptionofthiscourseisthatallwritingemergesfromandrespondstoaparticularproblem,audience,andpurpose,thecoursefocusesonhelpingyoudevelopmultiplewritingstrategiesfordiversecommunicationsituations.Somespecificcourseobjectivesinclude:

    masteringthepracticesandprinciplesoftechnicalcommunicationwithparticularemphasisonplanning,audienceanalysis,persuasion,clearandeffectivewritingstyle,organization,graphicsandinformationdesign

    refiningawritingprocessthatwillenableyoutocommunicatewell,meetdeadlines,andworkaspartofateam

    attendingandparticipatinginclassroomdiscussionsandpeerreviewsessions(whichwillbeasignificantportionofyourgrade)

    demonstratingtheabilitytospeakandpresentpersuasivelyinaprofessionalsetting,includingtheabilitytoselectanddesigneffectivepresentationgraphicsand

    designingandexecutingseveralformsoftechnicalcommunicationincludingmemos,letters,anobject/processdescription,instructions,aninformalreport,andapresentation.

    Grade Descriptors Thefollowingaregeneralguidelinestoexpectationsandcriteriaforgradingwork.AOutstanding:representssuperlativeparticipationinallcourseactivitiesallassignedworkcompleted,withveryhighqualityinallcoursework.BExcellent:representsaboveaverageparticipationinallcourseactivitiesallassignedworkcompleted,withconsistentlyhighqualityincoursework.CAverage:representsgoodparticipationinallcourseactivitiesallassignedworkcompleted,withgenerallygoodqualityoverallincoursework.DBelowaverage:representsunevenparticipationincourseactivitiessomegapsinassignedworkcompleted,withinconsistentqualityincoursework.FInadequate:representsminimalparticipationincourseactivitiesseriousgapsinassignedworkcompleted,orverylowqualityincoursework.

    Participation 300levelwritingclassesarededicatedtopreparingstudentsforcareersasprofessionalcommunicators.Assuch,inclassactivitiesanddiscussionareaprimarymeansofinstructionandlearning.Allstudentsareexpectedtoconductthemselveslikeprofessionalsinthecourse.Participationincludesbutisnotlimitedtocomingtoclasspreparedandwithalltheworkdueparticipatinginclassactivitiesandmaintainingacourteousandconsiderateattitudeinclass(forexample:cellphonesonsilent).Allworkshouldbeturnedinpromptly,ontheduedate,withtheproperformatting,andwithattentiontospellingandgrammar.Completingungradedwritingsuchasdraftsandothershortwritingsisassumedaspartofyourparticipation.Everyfailuretoparticipateintheabovemannerwillloweryouroverallfinalgradeby1/3ofagrade(e.g.fromanAtoanA,andsoon).

  • Attendance Attendingclassandparticipatingintheclassactivitiesisindicativeofprofessionalconductandisabasiccourtesytoothersintheclass.Youareexpectedtoattendeveryclass.EveryunexcusedabsenceorfailuretoparticipateafterthesecondweekstartingwithclassonSeptember2willloweryouroverallfinalgradeby1/3ofagrade(e.g.fromanAtoanA,andsoon).Iamhappytodiscusstheabsencepolicy.Iwilldeterminewhatconstitutesanexcusedabsence.
