    General descr iption of the Institution: The Technological Education Institute ofPiraeus is an autonomous Higher Education Institution of Public Law. It is mainlysupportedby statefundsandtheSpecialAccountofResearch.

    Special Account of Research: This account is handling allocations for research andeducation aswell as allocations such asOperational Program for Education and InitialVocationalTraining (O.P.Education),derived fromvarioussourcesanddestined for thecoverofexpensesthatareessentialfortheneedsofresearch,education,training,projectdevelopmentandcontinuoustraining.Intheframeworkofthenewcultureofinternationaleducation,allfoundationsofhighereducationarechargedwithanewsocialcostderivedfromtheiractiveparticipationintheeconomy. Applied technological research is constantly creating closer bonds withproductionunits.ThisconnectionismaterializedthroughtheSpecialAccountandthisiswhythisaccountis constantlyupgraded.

    Technological Resear ch Center : Within the bounds of approach of T.E.I. with theProduction Units, this Technological Research Center (T.R.C.) of Piraeus and Islandsaimsatelaboratingresearchesandstudieswithinitsareaofresponsibility.

    VocationalTrainingCentr e:LocatedatthecentreofAthens,theVocationalTrainingCentreofferstrainingprogramstouniversityandHighSchoolgraduates.

    AcademicCalendar :EachAcademicYearstartsonthe1stofSeptemberandendsonthe5thofJulyofthefollowingyear. Itincludestwosemesters(winterandspringsemester)of15weekseach.At theendofeachsemester,twosequentialexaminationperiodsareprogrammed(ofusually15daysof length).

    Admission conditions:CertificateofUpperSecondaryEducation(LyceumDiploma12years of basic education) and university entrance examination or Technical andVocational School Certificate and university entrance examination (proportion ofadmission10%)

    Main University Regulations: According to the Studies Regulation, published in theGov. Gar.816\2151999,themodulesarecategorizedassuch:

    Compulsory (C) CompulsoryOption(CO) Optional(Op)

    Thetotalnumberofmodules foreachstudentisforty (40)and isweighted (240ECTScredits).Eachcoursemay include theory, labs, tutorials, seminars and special projects.Someof themodulesarecharacterizedasprerequisites fortheattendanceofotheronescharacterizedasdependants.

    Exams: Depending on the way that each module is being instructed, there are Labexaminations,takingplaceduringthesemester,projectsandtwosuccessiveexaminationperiodsattheendofeachsemester.

    Placement: The student is entitled to a sixmonth placement as long as he hassuccessfullyattended2/3ofthecompulsorycoursesandallspecializationones.Theaimoftheplacementistheapplicationofalltheknowledgegainedduringthestudies.ItcantakeplaceinpublicorprivatecompaniesaswellasineducationalcentersandenterprisesofEUcountries,within the frameworkofEuropeanprograms.Acertain fee isgiventothestudentsunderplacement.

    Dissertation:Thedissertationiselaboratedunderthesupervisionoftheeducationalstaffon subjects related to the topic of studies, andmust be publicly presented to a threemembercommittee, oneofthembeingthesupervisor.

    GeneralInformationforStudents

    Cost of living: The cost of living for students isminimal due to the lowpricesof theinstitutions services and the rent allowance provided to students facing financialdifficulties.Additionally, there are no tuition fees, thebooks andnotes are offered forfree. Some students are entitled to scholarships from the National Foundation ofScholarships,dependingon their studyrecordandtheirfinancialsituation.ScholarshipsarealsolikelyprovidedtostudentscontinuingtheirstudiesinapostgraduateleveleitherinGreeceorabroad.Studentsgeteveryyeartheir Identitycardswiththeir subscriptionfromthesecretariat,andconsequentlytheyenjoyreducedpricesinallmeansoftransport(buses, trolleys, metro, trains, ships, airplanes) in Greece and abroad (trains andairplanes).

    Accommodation: Students with financial difficulties aswell as those that come fromfamilieswithmanychildrenarehostedinhotelroomswithwhichTEIhasaccomplishedanagreement,otherwisearentallowanceisprovided.

    Meals:Studentsthatareentitledtoamealcardhaveaccesstofreebreakfast,lunchanddinnerintherestaurantoftheSchoollocatedonthegroundfloorofBuildingAofT.E.I.Therestofthestudentscaneatatthesamerestaurantforasymbolicamountofmoney.The restaurantscapacity isof600peopleandithas20employees.Therearealsofourcafeteriaswithintheschoolarea.

    MedicalFacilities:Provided thatstudentsarenotinsured inanyotherservice,theyareentitledtofullhealthcareandhospitalization.Thepersonalhealthbookletdistributedtothem ensures that they are free of charge for medical examination, dental work,orthopedicequipment,pregnancyallowanceandphysiotherapy.AdoctorandanurseareemployedbytheDepartmentandareavailableonaregularbasisformedicaladviceanddealingwithemergency incidents.

    FinancialSuppor tfor Students:Undercertaincircumstances,studentsfacingfinancialproblemshaveaccesstoaninterestfreeloanthatshouldberepaidaftertheterminationofstudiesonamonthlybasis.

    StudentAffair sOffice:Eachstudent isallocatedtoamemberofpermanentstaff,whoconsults/mentors him in every case. When necessary, psychological support may beprovidedbyspecialstaff.AccordingtothePresidentialProvisions483/84,workingstudentsarefacilitatedintheirstudies aswell as their exams.They are entitled to a fourteendays leave and reducedworkinghours.Studentswithspecialqualificationscanbeemployedtoaparttimejobinvarious T.E.Iprogramsandinspecificservicesofthefoundation.
