The Psychic Factor in Obesity BY

    A. R. SALMON-MALEBRANCHE

    (Paris, France)

In this work the author underlines the importance of the psychological factor in cases of obesity. This factor drives the patient to increase his food consumption, either firstly, because he feels weakened and submits himself t o voluntary over- feeding, or secondly, to fight against the depression which comes from the obesity itself or against the feeling of weakness which arises in the course of treatment directed against obesity.

The frequency of the psychological factor is proved by the therapeutic effect of psychamines and particularly of dextrogyre amphetamine, which works through a real ))chemical psychotherapy, without pure suggestion, as the author has verified, and which has no inconvenient effects if it is employed only in small regular doses.
