Passive Voice

Thepassive voiceis agrammatical construction(specifically, a voice). Thenounor noun phrase that would be theobjectof an active sentence appears as thesubjectof a sentence or clause in the passive voice. The subject of a sentence or clause featuring the passive voice typically denotes the recipient of the action rather than the performer. The passive voice inEnglishis formedperiphrastically: the usual construction uses theauxiliary verb be(orget) together with thepast participle of the main verb. The passive voice is used when we want to emphasize the action (the verb) and the object of a sentence rather subject. this means that the subject is either less important than the action itself or that we don't know who or what the subject is.

Structure: Subject + finite form of to be + Past Participle (3rd column of irregular verbs)

Passive voice is used when the focus is on the action. It is not important or not known, however, who or what is performing the action. My bike was stolen, in the example above, the focus is on the fact that my bike was stolen. I do not know, however, who did it. Sometimes a statement in passive is more polite than active voice. The passive voice is not used with: the verbs of perception or emotion a progressive time an indirect object complement. If the main verb is one of perception or emotion, the passive voice is not usually structured with the verb to be.

Use of Passive Voice

Unlike the active voice, in the passive voice the use of auxiliary and participle verbs predominates. It is also common to indicate that the action is performed by the subject, with the connective by

We also use the passive voice when we talk about what has to happen to some object in the sentence, even if the subject who does it is not mentioned. In this case is also always used the participle of the main verb: His shoes have been washed. My watch has been repaired .

In writing, especially in newspapers, it is common to use the passive voice to speak of facts or events known, what is not said who or who do or say it. They are phrases like "is well known", "is said", "commonly known", among others: Sir, it is said that man does not reach the moon. It is real? It is well known that gravity keeps everything on the ground. With modal verbs, we use the passive voice when we talk about what can or should happen to something, that is, when the subject will receive the action of the verb. In this case, we will also use the verb to be to indicate the passivity of the action: This work must be completed on Monday. The goal can be achieved with some effort.

EXAMPLES

To transform an active sentence to passive we consider the following rules: The object of the active sentence becomes the subject of the passive The main verb is replaced by the auxiliary "to be", at the same time, next to the main verb in participle The subject of the main sentence becomes a complement of the passive agent If we make mention in the sentence to the subject who performs the action (agent subject) this anger normally introduced by the preposition "by.

Rules for Transformation from voice Active to voice Passive

Active Voice

Active voiceis a grammatical voicecommon in many of the world's languages. It is theunmarkedvoice for clauses featuring atransitive verbin nominative accusative languages, includingEnglishand most otherIndo-European languages.Active voice is used in a clause whosesubjectexpresses the main verb'sagent. That is, the subject does the verb's designated action.A clause whose agent is marked as grammatical subject is called an active clause. In contrast, a clause in which the subject has the role ofpatientor theme is named a passive clause, and its verb is expressed inpassive voice. Many languages have both an active and a passive voice; this allows for greater flexibility in sentence construction, as either the semantic agent or patient may take thesubjectsyntactic role.

Structure:The active voice has the structure of: subject + verb + direct complement.

Use of Active Voice

The active voice is used when you want to highlight the person performing the action. The active voice does not have a literature type where it is drastically used most. It is generally used in literary, periodical, and scientific texts alike. In addition, the active voice is more common than the passive voice in the conversation. In particular, scientific texts require the use of passive voice. Also, compared to the passive voice, the active voice is used more in literary texts. The verbs in active voice are those that are used to narrate, describe, comment, comment, argue, ie where the protagonist, reporter, journalist, chronicler, narrator takes the floor in what is called present and past lived, ie Subject of the action he performs.

It is the type of prayer we use most often in all tenses.

In the case of simple times (present, past and future), the simple conjugation corresponding to each of the times is used. In the case of perfect times, we use the basic structure of each of them, always using have in the corresponding time, plus the participle of the active verb (has swept, had swept, will have swept). For the rest of the continuous times, with the active voice always the form of the gerund is used (verb ending in -ing. The active voice also uses it when we express an action performed by the subject, but without indicating its object: The car runs . The dog barked. We also use the active voice with modal verbs to indicate that someone can or should do an action. In these cases the verb is also used in its simple conjugations of present, past or future. Voz Pasiva
