Also, there are three other industrial cities in this region famous ofmetal, manufacturing and food industries, which export many of their products outside the Kingdom. The geographical location of the Eastern Region is of great importance. It is the eastern portal of Saudi Arabia thatextends more than 700 km along the coast of Arabian Gulf, which enabled it to build several ports for import andexport. The Eastern Region is -also- considered a natural source of food, since in which lies the world largest natural oasisAhsa, that is famous of the finest types of palm trees in the world..In addition to being one of the major industrial castles in the Middle East, the Eastern Region combines the sea, thebeautiful beaches, the lush oases, as well as the spacious quiet deserts. The processes of exploration for oil began in 1925 when Standard Oil of California (SOCAL) now (CHEVRON) starteddrilling the first well in Dammam; the results were below aspirations. But because the evidences had indicated thepresence of oil and gas, the company went on exploring. After drilling nine successive wells, the dream came trueon March 3, 1928 when Dammam well No.7 - which was drilled 1441 meters deep in a layer called (the Arabicgeological layer) - produced large amounts of oil.. On that date, the Kingdom entered the era of petroleumindustry. The export of crude oil began in the same year through a small port in Al Khobar, where oil was being shipped toBahrain. Later, a port was built at Ras Tannura to receive oil tankers. From Ras Tannura port, the first quantity of oilwas shipped on Rabi1- 11- 1358 AH corresponding to May 1,1939 AC, in an official ceremony under the auspicesof King Abdul-Aziz Al Saud. Since then, oil production has increased significantly. Before 1944, the average production did not exceed 20,000barrels per day. It went up to 50,000 barrels per day in 1949, while in 1970 the average of daily production was305,000 barrels, until it set a record in 1980 when it reached 9,631,366 barrels per day. 4.
